Build Your Skills is an outreach program to bring skills training, in the trade core curriculum, to the Local's membership. The program leverages the power of the Internet to make training easily accessible.

Before you register for courses, you can preview them by going to the Course Offerings link on this Web site. You register for courses through our Learning Management System (LMS). The course is delivered through the LMS, and you take it at your convenience.

You will have 8 weeks to complete the online portion of the course. Courses can take anyway from 10 to 30 hours of actual online time to complete, depending on your individual pace.

Before entering the body of the course, you take a pre-assessment to gauge your background knowledge in the topic area. The LMS records these pre-assessment test results, for your future reference.

When you complete the course's online portion, you will be directed to the live training/test calendar. To complete the course, you must schedule and complete a live post-assessment at a Build Your Skills Center. Build Your Skills Centers are located in San Francisco and Sacramento.

The live post-assessment will include a short multiple-choice/true-false test, and in some cases a hands-on component. Your results on this final assessment will be entered into your LMS transcripts. You can then access your transcripts to compare the results of your pre- and post-assessment, which will help you see how much you've learned.

Upon passing your live post-assessment, you will receive a certificate of completion for that course.

Many courses are supported by a textbook. Please check the course description to see if there is a textbook that you must purchase when registering for the course. You can purchase supporting textbooks through our online book resource library.
